High School Intern: The below position is not an ongoing internship. An internship opportunity will be determined per request.

The High School Intern is under the supervision of the Director, Youth Services Librarian and/or the Circulation Librarian, depending on who is on duty at the circulation desk.  The intern performs various duties as assigned for the operation of the library and assisting where needed.

 

            [a]Specific Duties

· Assists with children’s programs. This includes room setup, occasional craft preparation, crowd control, and clean-up.

· Assists patrons with technology related questions. Assistance may include helping with basic web searching, use of the library’s online catalog and other online resources, printing, email setup and navigation, social media setup and navigation, basic file management, and basic software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

·Helps compile reader’s advisory information and recommendations

·Shelves materials and reads shelves

· Assists with library bulletin boards and displays

·Answers the phone and routes calls as necessary

·Cleans library materials as needed

·Performs other duties as designated by librarians in assigned work area

            [b]Other Job Functions

· Will develop a working knowledge about the organization and care of library materials, library services, and programs

·Maintains confidentiality of library patron records

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

· Ability to learn the physical organization of the library and library policies

· Ability to create courteous, pleasant first impression of the library

· Ability to establish good patron rapport

· Flexibility to deal with multiple and extra unexpected tasks and patrons simultaneously

·         Must have knowledge of and experience with computers and computer software, particularly MS Office.

· Ability to learn operation of copy machines, printers, and other library equipment

· Ability to learn routine library procedures

 

Qualifications

· At least 16 years old

· Ability to follow written and oral instructions

· An awareness of the purposes and functions of the public library 

·Strong interest in reading preferred

 

*  Must complete Kalona Public Library volunteer form.

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
