Interior Design Assistant

Office Hours: 8am - 5pm

Uhlmann’s Furniture is a privately owned business with locations in Williamsburg and Grinnell.  “Customers can choose from a large selection of different sized furnishings that is sure to please.  The professional and knowledgeable staff will assist customers from the moment they walk in the door of either the Williamsburg or Grinnell locations.”

The Interior Design Assistant Internship, under the general supervision of Uhlmanns’ Furniture staff, will provide opportunities to observe staff interactions with customers, and gain familiarity with how interior design concepts can be applied to a retail setting.

Essential Functions: 

  •  Use and model appropriate behavior in keeping with the mission, vision, and beliefs and in accordance with operation procedures and policies. 
  •  Welcome, value and nurture people of all backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, as well as support and promote an environment that accepts differences.
  •  The Interior Design Assistant Intern will observe staff members as they interact with customers.  Questions that arise during these meetings should be reserved for after the meeting is complete, to not interfere with focus on the customer.  The Intern should be ready to assist during customer meetings if needed. 
  •  The intern will keep vendor catalogs and displays updated with new product, remove discontinued product, and replace products when they have been moved by staff or customers.
  •  The intern will assist with keeping the showroom and work areas picked up and organized to promote a positive image.  This can include fluffing pillows, straightening cushions, and putting accessories or items back if a designer or customer has moved something from its original spot.
  •  The intern will assist with general office duties including computer input and filing, and assist with design layout as needed.
  •  The intern will learn basic vendor product offerings, warranty information, furniture construction, product quality and features through daily interaction with staff.

Minimum Requirements:

Skills/Knowledge:  Must have the ability to follow instructions, strong organizational and communication skills, and be courteous and respectful.  Must be a detail-oriented team player.  Professional, trustworthy, and confidential conduct is required.  Intern must enjoy working with the public, be a self-starter, motivated, and able to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing. 

Experience/Education:  Must be a high school student in good standing, and interested in pursuing a career in interior design or retail sales after high school.  Must be poised, mature and possess a positive attitude while being flexible.

Attire: Plan to dress appropriately for a retail sales setting.  Conservative, business casual attire is required.

General Physical Activities with or without reasonable accommodation:  Frequent sitting, standing, reaching, walking or lifting up to 30lbs.  Occasional kneeling, crouching, crawling, grasping, pulling, pushing or lifting over 30 lbs. 

 

Covid Policy:

If intern is exposed to Covid, they should isolate from Internship location for 10 days after exposure.  If intern has any symptoms of Covid, they should isolate from Internship location until they have a negative Covid test and are symptom and fever free for 24 hours.  While on site, plan to mask unless able to be at least 6ft away from other employees.  If customers enter the store with a mask, intern should mask as well.  

 

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, WILL BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
