Heavy/Light Equipment Technician Assistant

Internship Length: 90 hrs
Office Hours: 8-5

The internship will provide the student with the opportunity for career exploration in the field of heavy & light equipment mechanics.  The student will work alongside a certified mechanic.
  

Essential functions:
  • Assist a certified heavy equipment & light equipment mechanic in teardown and repair of cranes, loaders, excavators, bull dozers, etc.
  • Assist with engine and transmission rebuilds on heavy and light equipment. (Note:  Some cylinders are in excess of 50 feet in length and require multiple persons to handle.)
  • Intern will have exposure with customers who have equipment needs and/or repair questions.  Some contact with the Bobcat distributorship.
  • Help keep work areas neat and organized to promote positive image. Use appropriate behavior in keeping with Rexco Equipment’s mission, vision and beliefs, and in accordance with operating procedures and policies.
Minimum requirements:
  • Skills/Knowledge:  Ability to follow instructions.  Must have strong organizational and communication skills, be a team player, and enjoy working with the public without bias or prejudice.  Must be detail-oriented.  Professional and trustworthy conduct is required.  Student must be courteous and respectful.  Basic knowledge of equipment and engine repair helpful.  Familiarity with tools also helpful.    
  • Experience/Education:  Must be 18 years of age and  a high school student in good standing.  Must be poised, mature and possess a positive attitude while being flexible.  
  • Steel toe boots are required and students must follow all safety policies and procedures.    
  • Environment and Scheduling:  Work is performed in a shop environment.  There may be occasion for outdoor work.  Jeans and work-related clothing required.  Heavy boots recommended (steel-toe not required).  Student will have customer contact, so no torn or ripped clothing.  Plain shirts with no writing preferred.   Safety glasses and ear plugs are provided by employer.
This description does not list all duties. Intern may be asked to perform other duties by the staff or supervisor. Intern will be evaluated on performance of the projects listed as well as interaction with employees and clients. On-site hours will be negotiated with each candidate.
