Internship Title: Animal Care Intern

 

Essential Functions:

·         Assists animal care technicians with shelter maintenance and animal care including upkeep of animal areas, daily facility cleaning, animal health and behavior assessment/treatment and evaluation of animals for adoption.

·         The position is 60% cleaning, 20% working with people and 20% hands on animal care.

·         Assist with cleaning and caring for the animals on a daily basis, cleaning cages, litter boxes, bowls, toys, bedding, etc.

·         Assist with cleaning the facility each day, ensuring it is prepared for public visitors.

·         Assists with preparing animals for medical procedures including preparing the surgery log, documenting surgery and/or care administered, assisting with animals during surgery and recovery, and cleaning when the procedures are done. 

·         Assists in preparing animals for adoption including bathing, assembling behaviors, and creating adoption profiles. Assists with adoption counseling with the visiting public.

·         Documents observation of animal health and behavior, documents handling and treatments.

·         Helps maintain neat and organized work areas to promote a positive image.

·         Assist in delegating to and helping volunteers in every day facility and animal care tasks.

·         Conducts themselves in keeping with the mission, vision, and beliefs of the organization and acts in accordance with operating procedures and policies.

 

Minimum Requirements:

·         Enjoy animals and people

·         Be prompt and dependable

·         Take pride and ownership in work

·         Good written and communication skills are essential

·         Must be a self-starter, team player and able to perform routine tasks without being prompted

·         Must be a high school student in good standing

·         Must be poised, mature and possess a positive attitude while being flexible

·         Ability to follow instructions

·         Professional and trustworthy conduct is required

·         Must be courteous and respectful

·         Science and animal classes a plus

·         Must pass a standard Background Check before onsite work (the site will cover the cost of this internship requirement)

Work Environment:

·         Able to work well and maintain composure while assisting with unpleasant animal conditions and difficult animal emergencies

·         Applicant must be comfortable working around domestic animals

·         This position requires attention to detail, fast reflexes, frequent bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and kneeling

 

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.
