Live Animal Caretaker Intern

Internship Length: 90 hrs
Office Hours: 8:00am - 4:30pm

Essential Duties:

  • Assist the Naturalist with care and maintenance of the live animals housed at the Central Park Nature Center.
  • Handle and feed turtles, snakes, salamanders, frogs, and fish.
  • Clean aquariums and filter systems.
  • Maintain water levels in aquariums.
  • Research and put together an informational display about one of the live animals.
  • Fill and clean outdoor bird feeding stations.

 

Other Duties as Requested:

  • Assist with capture of live food for the animals.
  • Any other environmental education or conservation duties, as requested by other full-time staff or supervisor.

 

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Capable of performing routine tasks without being prompted.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Be able to work independently with supervision, as needed.
  • Professional and trustworthy conduct is required. Must be courteous and respectful.
  • Must be a high school senior - in good standing.
  • Must be prompt and dependable.

 

Part-time internships are on a non-paid basis. Dedicated volunteers are extremely helpful to our staff and volunteer experience is a valuable asset to students. Candidates will report to the Central Park Nature Center as their main base of operations.

 

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE. SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
