The Jones County Conservation Board offers internships to students who have an interest in environmental education and natural resource management. The Land Management Intern focuses students on habitat and wildlife management activities around Central Park and within Jones County Wildlife Areas. Dates for internships are flexible. Applicants should be flexible, responsible, and accountable and be able to work as part of a team.

 

Essential Duties:

The Land Management Intern will assist the Wildlife Manager, Park Ranger and Seasonal Staff in daily trail, preserve, and wildlife habitat maintenance, including the following:

- Invasive weed and brush removal, using hand and power tools, and some herbicide use.

- Trail and boat access checks for weekend clean up, debris removal, etc

- Assisting with Prescribed burns, when needed

- Mowing and trimming along trails and public high use areas

- Facility and equipment care and maintenance

- Some wood working, crafting and repairs, as needed.

- Campground and lake/beach safety duties

 

Specialty Experience and Projects:

Each year and season brings something different to the plan and needs of the campground and wildlife areas. Some specialized tasks and projects may include the following (but are not guaranteed):

- Plant and Wildlife Species surveys

- Pond and Lake quality assessments

- Wetland Monitoring and Native Plant installation

- Assist with Outdoor Programming with Naturalist

- Native seed collection and installation

- Bird and duck box monitoring and repairs

 

Minimum Job Requirements: Applicants should expect to meet the below standards:

- Must be a high school student in good standing.

- Prompt and dependable, communicate any absence or time off well in advance.

- Ability to take and follow direction and perform routine tasks without being prompted.

- Must be professional, courteous, respectful, and trustworthy

- Interest in Conservation and Outdoor Recreation is desired.

 

Part-time internships are on a non-paid basis. Dedicated volunteers are extremely helpful to our staff and volunteer experience is a valuable asset to students. Candidates will report to the Central Park Nature Center as their main base of operations.

THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE. SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
