Highway Equipment Technician Associate

Office Hours: 7:00AM-3:30PM

Essential Functions/Requirements:

  •     Must be able to perform heavy work outside in all types of adverse weather conditions.   
  •  Walking or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Must wear steel toed boots as protective footwear.
  • uch tasks as: installing ice blades on snow removal equipment; repairing problems on equipment; replacing or repairing guardrails, working in trenches on tiles, and cleaning and servicing equipment.
  •   Lifting heavy objects, sometimes with the aid of others.  Ability to lift and load items weighing up to 65 pounds.  
  •   Communicate effectively, both in writing and orally, with other employees, the public, etc.
  •   Must be able to lift 50 pounds unassisted at any one time.
  •   Must be able to work and walk on unstable, uneven ground, slopes and drainage washes for such tasks as installing and carrying snow fence, brush removal, litter pickup, drainage feature maintenance, and weed spraying as directed and supervised by staff.
  •   Handling and changing tires for tandem or four-wheel drive heavy-duty trucks.
  •  Shoveling snow from bridge decks and premix out of trucks as supervised.
  •  Willingness to learn to read and comprehend written material, manuals, policies and written instructions in order to properly work with hazardous materials, set up traffic control, complete work assignments, etc.
  •   Work attendance as scheduled is expected in order to perform job duties
  •  Must have the ability to understand and communicate verbal and written instructions in English.
  •  Must be able to diagnose and repair most mechanical malfunctions in specialized highway maintenance equipment and a variety of heavy-duty and/or public works equipment.
  •   Must have the ability to learn to weld, fabricate and modify equipment as supervised.
  •   Must have the desire to obtain skills in operating computers and related software applications to record and receive data.
  •  Must be able to effectively operate hand tools, power tools and light or heavy maintenance equipment as supervised.
  •  Must be able to communicate effectively and tactfully, both in writing and orally, with other employees, the public, vendors, etc.
  •  Must have the ability to learn to read plans, blueprints, flowcharts, schematics and specification.

    • Skills/Knowledge:  Ability to follow instructions.  Must have strong organizational and communication skills, be a team player, and enjoy working with the public without bias or prejudice.  Must be detail-oriented.  Professional and trustworthy conduct is required.  Must be courteous and respectful.  Natural mechanical abilities helpful, along with basic knowledge of tools.
    • Must be a high school senior in good standing.  Must be poised, mature and possess a positive attitude while being flexible.
    • Coveralls and/or soilable clothing is appropriate.

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
