Civil Rights Intern

Internship Length: 45 hrs
Office Hours: 8:00-5:00 M-F

Goal: Advancement of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and civil rights. Internship offers opportunity to acquire skills and work closely with civil rights professionals while gaining experience in research, writing, strategic communications, and policy.

FUNCTIONS:

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  •  Maintain working knowledge of the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission and Cedar Rapids Municipal Code.
  • Understand the applications of the Cedar Rapids Municipal Code.
  • Center principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in all projects.
  • Conduct research for projects (ex: research on specific topics, legislation, policies, etc.).
  • Draft and edit public education materials and for the Commission Newsletter.
  • Assist staff in drafting and proofreading relevant documents.
  • Participate at local and state workshops, trainings, meetings, events, and conferences of stakeholder groups.
  • Report to and work closely with the Internship Supervisor on projects.
  • Special projects, as assigned.
     

Requirements:

  • Commitment to advancing and protecting civil rights and social justice.
  • Student must be a junior or senior in HS in good academic standing.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and writing.
  • The ability to work with a wide range of people.
  • Attention to detail, excellent organizing and time-management skills.
  • The initiative to see projects through to completion.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must maintain confidentiality.
  • Adhere to the Commission's mission, vision, and professional work environment.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences.
  • Commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts.
  • Student will provide their own transportation and insurance.
  • Intern may be asked to perform other duties by the staff or supervisor
     

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
