Civil Rights Intern

Goal: Advancement of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and civil rights. Internship offers opportunity to acquire skills and work closely with civil rights professionals while gaining experience in research, writing, strategic communications, and policy.

FUNCTIONS:

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

Understand and work to promote the work of the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission.
Understand the role of the commission as determined by the Cedar Rapids Municipal Code.
Support and promote principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in commission projects.
Assist with research for projects (ex: promotional or educational materials, upcoming legislation, revision of policies, etc.).
Draft and edit public education materials.
Support information included in the Commission Newsletter or social media presence.
Participate at local and state workshops, trainings, meetings, events, and conferences of stakeholder groups.
Attend meetings or promotional events (such as Farmer's Markets), as appropriate.
Special projects, as assigned.

Requirements:

Commitment to advancing and protecting civil rights and social justice.
Demonstrate a commitment that values all individuals and respects differences.
Must maintain confidentiality.
Student must be a junior or senior in HS in good academic standing.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Attention to detail, excellent organizing and time-management skills.
The initiative to see projects through to completion.
Adhere to the Commission's mission, vision, and professional work environment.

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
