Goal: The goal of this project is to raise awareness of the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission, Cedar Rapids Municipal Code § 69, Marion Municipal Code § 31, and Fair Housing Law.

Functions:

· Become familiar with the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission, Cedar Rapids Municipal Code § 69, and Fair Housing Law. Represent the Commission in the community in a positive manner.

· Understand the applications of the Cedar Rapids Municipal Code § 69, Marion Municipal Code § 31, and the Fair Housing Act.

· Collaborate on the development/implementation of community goals for the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission.

· Report to and work closely with the Internship Supervisor on projects.

· Assist in the revision of public educational presentations on the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission, Cedar Rapids Municipal Code § 69, and Fair Housing Act and its application, as needed.

· Assist staff in drafting document requests for involved parties.

· Assist staff in drafting and proofreading relevant documents.

· Assist with filing, file closings and related activities.

· Draft and submit entries for the Cedar Rapids Civil Right Commission Newsletter.

· Participate and network at local and state workshops, trainings, meetings, events, and conferences of stakeholder groups.

· Perform other office tasks as assigned.

Requirements

:

· Student must have interest in the area of civil rights. 

· Student will be a junior or senior in HS or a college student in good academic standing.

· Must have strong organizational and communication skills, be a team player, and enjoy working with the public without bias or prejudice.

· Must be detail-oriented.

· Professional and trustworthy conduct is required.

· Must be courteous and respectful.

· Computer knowledge is helpful.

· Must maintain confidentiality and student will adhere to strict guidelines regarding this issue.

· Must be poised, mature and possess a positive attitude while being flexible.

· Student will provide their own transportation,insurance, and parking costs.

· Student must adhere to the mission, vision and professional work environment of Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission.

· Intern may be asked to perform other duties by the staff or supervisor.

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
