Barn/Instruction Assistant

Internship Length: 45 hrs
Office Hours: 5:30 AM-8:00 PM

Essential Functions regarding the Barn Assistant:

 

  • Maintain the barn environment in a clean, organized and safe condition.
  • Provide care for the needs of the horses.
  • Assure that the condition of the horses & barn allows the lesson program to operate smoothly.
  • Feed horses, observe eating habits.
  • Clean stalls, observe & report any unusual stall conditions.
  • Observe & report any injuries or changes in horses’ behavior.
  • Rake, sweep, move hay, fill water tanks, pasture management, etc.
  • Check fence lines as needed.
  • Monitor supplies; shavings, hay, grain, rakes, shovels, etc.
  • Exercise horses as directed.
  • Provide assistance to medical care for horses as directed.
  • Interact with instructors and owner to develop a better understanding of managing a stable that safely meets the needs of the horses and clients.
   
Essential Functions regarding Riding Instruction (for those students advanced in riding):

  • Assist Riding Instructor as directed
  • Assist students with tacking up for lessons
  • Provide direction to students during tacking up process
  • Assist with mounting as directed
  • Observe mounted students & provide feedback to instructor on observations
  • Provide instruction to mounted students as directed by instructor
  • Provide feedback to instructor on lesson horse assignments
  • Provide feedback on educational materials presented to students
  • Provide exercise for lessons horses as directed
  • Keep tack room, brush boxes, viewing areas and arena neat & organized
  • Provide a positive image to students & parents that supports Greenbriar’s image
  • Interact with instructor & owner to develop a better understanding of managing a successful lesson program

Minimum Requirements:

  • Skills/Knowledge:  Ability to follow instructions. Professional and trustworthy conduct is required.  Must be courteous and respectful.
  • Must be able to interact with students in a positive supportive manner.
  • Student must possess knowledge and experience of horse behavior and safety procedures, care/feeding knowledge, basic animal medical knowledge, horse anatomy.
  • Must be a high school student in good standing.  Must be poised, mature and possess a positive attitude while being flexible.


THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
