Engineering Technician Trainee - VMEU

Office Hours: 7AM-12 noon 1-4PM

Vinton Municipal Electrical Utility (VMEU) is an independently owned power utility, operated by the City of Vinton.  The purpose of VMEU is to provide backup power generation for the City during emergencies, or times when power generation from the regional power grid is unavailable. 

The Engineering Technician Trainee will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of various aspects of power generation by the utility, from power line maintenance, to distribution, repair, and design.

Essential Functions: 

  • Use and model appropriate behavior in keeping with the mission, vision, and beliefs and in accordance with operation procedures and policies.

  • The Engineering trainee will observe line person in their normal daily activities, and will be required work outdoors subject to current weather conditions, and may be required to bend, stoop or observe in awkward positions. 
  • The trainee will observe personnel at our generation plant to obtain a better background in power generation and distribution, and fuel usage for those activities.
  • Trainee will learn about various pieces of hardware used in the distribution system and assembly of the hardware as it relates to generation of power for the city.
  • The trainee will work with general manager as they perform routine record keeping and reporting processes.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Skills/Knowledge:  Ability to follow instructions, strong organizational and communication skills, and be a team player.  Must be detail-oriented, courteous and respectful.  Professional, trustworthy, and confidential conduct is required.  Intern must enjoy working in a team environment, be a self-starter, motivated, and able to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing. 
  • Experience/Education:  Must be a high school student in good standing, and interested in pursuing engineering or a technical degree after high school.  Must be poised, mature and possess a positive attitude while being flexible.
  • Attire: Plan to dress appropriately for varied outdoor weather conditions.  Jeans or workpants free of holes, closed toed shoes and plain tshirt and/or sweatshirt.  VMEU will make available a hard hat to be worn as required based on the training taking place.
  • General Physical Activities with or without reasonable accommodation:  Frequent reaching, walking and lifting up to 30lbs.  Occasional kneeling, crouching, crawling, sitting, standing, grasping, pulling, and pushing and lifting over 30 lbs. 

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
