POSITION SUMMARY: The 45-hour practicum is designed to provide a selected high school student with the Workplace Learning Connection Internship program an opportunity for career exploration with a variety of settings that Dietitians practice in throughout the hospital and selected clinics in the community.

HOSPITAL IMPACT/PURPOSE of ASSIGNMENT: Assist the staff in providing the healthcare we’d like our loved ones to receive. Care of this magnitude is focused on, and considerate of, the needs of the whole person, body and mind.

HOURS of ASSIGNMENT
  1. The 45-hour practicum will be divided among the eight different divisions with the intern scheduled to be in these areas according to staff availability. 
  2. Hours will be during the Monday through Friday workweek and may be from 9 AM to 6 PM.  Hours will usually be between 4 and 8 hours in any one given day.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Job Shadowing as appropriate.
  2. Intern will rotate through several areas which may include some or all of the following inpatient and outpatient areas:  Rehabilitation, Witwer Children’ s Therapy, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Health Promotion and Weight Management, Diabetes Education, Cancer Care, Gestational Diabetes and Eating Disorders.
  3. Perform assigned duties as delegated by mentor.
  4. Demonstrate awareness of patient and personal safety by practicing correct body mechanics and standard precautions for infection control in performing job duties.
  5. Assist with tasks that organize, clean and maintain work unit areas, supplies and equipment.
  6. Maintain patient and visitor safety.  Report any safety hazards to your supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

 

  1. Extroverted, mature, cooperative, positive service-oriented individual with effective communication skills and positive body language who is dependable.
  2. Experienced with or capable of acquiring computer skills.
  3. Sensitive to the needs and concerns of patients, families and guests.  Enjoys interacting with people.
  4. Exercises good judgment.
  5. Knows how to find and use resources related to assignment.
  6. Performs assignment responsibilities by following St. Luke’s “Standards of Excellence.”
  7. Has good hearing and listening skills.
  8. Possesses a clear speaking voice and the ability to communicate clearly in English.
  9. Possesses high integrity and maintains confidentiality.
  10. Able to push a wheelchair and/or Staxi unit.
  11. Able to walk long distance repetitively/stand for up to 4 hour shifts.
  12. Able to cope effectively with stressful situations and time constraints.
  13. Considers “age-specific requirements” when dealing with patients, families and guests.
  14. Good manual dexterity.
  15. Practices infection control.  Repetitive hand hygiene, done in view of patients and guests, is essential.  
  16. Adheres to the St. Luke’s Volunteer dress code.
  INITIAL ORIENTATION & TRAINING
  1. Complete a St. Luke’s Volunteer application and interview.
  2. Complete a Volunteer Health Exam, TB testing and provide Immunization Documentation.
  3. Attend St. Luke’s Volunteer Orientation which includes:
    1. HIPPA
    2. Confidentiality
    3. Infection Control
    4. Cultural Sensitivity in Healthcare
    5. Safety & Security
    6. Hospital Codes

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
