Internship Length: 45 hrs

Goals of the internship:

To provide a student who is interested in a career in a medical field with the opportunity to learn the medical technology aspect of the health care field.
To expand the medical science experience and learning beyond the student’s existing classroom curriculum.
To give the student a practical learning opportunity of the complexities of the medical sciences and how (s)he can become a part of that profession.

Essential Functions:

Learn and perform any of the CLIA-waived testing with VGH laboratory staff supervision
Learn phlebotomy and collection of blood specimens with VGH laboratory staff supervision
Observe any of the moderate- or high-complexity testing performed at VGH.
Accompany VGH staff to the Emergency Department, Acute Care, Nursing & Rehab, etc.

Minimum Requirements

Comply with all VGH Laboratory policies and procedures.
Keep a professional manner in your actions and appearance
Confidentiality is of upmost importance

Current CLIA-waived testing performed in VGH Laboratory:
Afinion HbA1c
Dipstick or reagent tablet urinalysis
Abbott i-STAT Chem 8+
Alerei Influenza Molecular Testing
Kit Influenza Testing
RSV Kit testing
Triage BNP
Mono Testing
Β-HCG (urine only)

This job description does not list all the job duties. Intern may be asked to perform other duties by the staff or supervisor. Intern will be evaluated on performance of the projects listed as well as interaction with employees and clients. Work hours will be negotiated with each candidate.
