Archaeologist Intern 

The mission of this Office is to develop, disseminate, and preserve knowledge of Iowa's human past through Midwestern and Plains archaeological research, scientific discovery, public stewardship, service, and education.

The projects will vary by year, see previous projects below:

Past Summer project: 

  •  Social media features: Browse through our thousands of artifact photos to find an interesting object to research and write a few engaging lines for the public in a social media post. Helps to build skills in writing, research, and communicating science to the public.
  • Update teaching trunks: “Catalog” teaching trunk items into an electronic database, create new bags and labels, digitize analog and print media for teachers to use more easily in the classroom, create photo inventory and descriptions of teaching trunk items.  Helps to build skills in organization, cataloging, creating systems, standardization, etc.
  • Possibility of some website work/maintenance
  • Projectile point identification project - Student will learn a lot of great information regarding stone tools and projectile points - spear head and arrowheads - and even museum displays. Exposure to the culture history of Iowa, suing ground based LiDAR for mapping in 3D, photographing artifacts, flint knapping, throwing darts using atlatl.

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
