Internship Title: Congressional Intern

Qualifications: Applicants should have an interest in government, social policy, and the social sciences.  Applicants should have strong problem-solving skills, excellent verbal and written communication abilities, and strong research skills.  A willingness to serve the public with a wide variety of concerns, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team, are also important.

 

Program Outline: The work schedule is flexible, but an applicant should be available for blocks of 8-10 hours per week.

 

Description: Interns in the Iowa City office assist with constituent services duties, including casework, grant research, academy nominations, outreach, attending constituent meetings, and numerous other activities.  Casework responsibilities include conducting intakes on constituents’ problems and concerns, processing cases to problem resolution/referral under supervision, and various other duties.

 

Application Procedure: Student must complete additional application and be selected and approved by Congressman Loebsacks office. The application requires a cover letter, a resume, and a letter of recommendation.
Student must meet with host in person prior to confirmation. 

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
