Accounting Rotation

Internship Length: 45 hrs
Office Hours: 8:00-5:00, Mon-Fri

Essential Functions:

  • Assist controller, accountant and database managers to perform a variety of tasks
  • Exercises confidentiality of patient and hospital information at all times.  Must sign a confidentiality statement with the volunteer office 
  • Filing of Accounting documents. 
  • Data entry.
  • Reconcile various accounting documents and data, confirm their accuracy.
  • Help coordinate vendor statements (accounts payable) and invoices
  • Will interface with other departments/divisions to exchange information.
  • Help keep work areas neat and organized to promote positive image. 
  • Use appropriate behavior in keeping with the mission, vision and beliefs and in accordance with operating procedures and policies.
  • Student interns will rotate in the Revenue Cycle Department within Accounting and will include Patient Access & Central Scheduling, Health Information and Privacy, Revenue Audit , Patient Account , Credit and Collection, and Financial Advocates. 

 

Minimum Requirements:
  

  • THIS INTERNSHIP IS AVAILABLE IN THE FALL (SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER) OR SPRING (APRIL/MAY).
  • Student must complete the online Mercy Medical volunteer form ONCE they are approved through the WLC internship process. This includes HIPPA Training, Training Videos and Confidentiality Forms.
  • Student must attend and participate in the Mercy Orientation Process.
  • Student must provide immunization records that include: 2 MMR's, 2 Varicella and Flu Shot or Titre Tests, plus be fully-vaccinated against Covid. Student must check with Mercy volunteer coordinator if they seek a  medical or religious exemption. TB Test is required; this will be done at Mercy and Mercy will cover the cost.
  • Student must have a social security number or appropriate visa number because a background check will be performed.
  • Students must adhere to department requirements for processes and procedures as listed in job descriptions functions.
  • Skills/Knowledge: Good communication, organization and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in applied math, accurate with numbers and reconciling data.
  • Must be detail-oriented.
  • General understanding of principles of bookkeeping and accounting highly preferred.
  • Experience with computers and accounting software (MS Excel or other spreadsheet) preferred.
  • Able to use basic office equipment including telephone, copier, fax, computer.
  • Prompt and dependable, takes pride and ownership in work.  Must be a self-starter, team player and able to perform routine tasks without being prompted.
  • Must be a high school student in good standing. Must be poised, mature and possess a positive attitude while being flexible. Ability to follow instructions.  Professional and trustworthy conduct is required. Must be courteous and respectful. 
  • Business casual attire. 

This description does not list all duties. Intern may be asked to perform other duties by the staff or supervisor. Intern will be evaluated on performance of the projects listed as well as interaction with employees and clients. On-site hours will be negotiated with each candidate.
