Job Summary 

Under the supervision of the Director, Assistant Director or Parks Foreman, the Parks & Recreation intern will provide assistance in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of recreation and aquatic programming.  Specific duties are discussed in interviews and may include the following, but are not limited to: facilitating and/or instructing recreational activities (Tball, Blastball, Tennis, Mini Golf, Adult Pickleball, Volleyball, Adult Softball, Dodgeball, etc.).  Preparing and maintaining equipment.  Projects in the general program/administrative office.  

Responsibilities

  • Assist in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating recreation programs and special events. 
  • Communicate instructions verbally to participants during the program, including but not limited to directives, technique and feedback.  
  • Implement and supervise safety/risk management protocols in a caring and fun environment for participants, volunteers and staff. 
  • Assist with preparing sites and equipment for activity/event, and with proper clean up and storage at the end of each activity/event. 
  • Inform Assistant Director of any program delivery issues or concerns, maintenance concerns, or any issues that would be a deterrent to a safe, productive program setting. 
  • Conduct and maintain program documentation, including lesson plans, attendance, participant assessments (where needed), progress notes, evaluations and incident reports. 
  • Provide assistance where necessary in the operations of the Vinton Aquatic Center. 
  • Assist with park maintenance and upkeep where needed. 
  • Attend required program staff meetings and trainings. 
  • Pass required safety checks
  • Enforce program policies and procedures. 
  • Create a nurturing, positive and professional environment. 
  • Communicate clearly, honestly, and respectfully with all parents, volunteers, participants & staff. 
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Commitment to a positive, fun team oriented working environment
  • Passion for the profession of Parks & Recreation
  • Working toward completion in a degree in the field of Parks / Recreation / Leisure Services. 
  • Ability to work effectively with all populations of people
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Completion of a basic State of Iowa background check
  • Ability to lift 40lbs. 
  • Ability to stand and be active for long periods of time
  • Basic computer processing skills, including MS Office 
  • Ability to multi-task in very stressful environment
  • Ability to show sound reasoning and independent judgment
  • Ability to tolerate extended periods in the elements, including sun, snow, heat and water.

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.
