Title: Athletic Training Internship

Internship position available in the University of Iowa, Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Department with UI Sports Medicine Outreach

This position is provided to allow the intern to gain experience and knowledge about the athletic training profession, as provided to fulfill sports medicine and athletic training service agreements. UI Sports Medicine partners with local sports teams/ clubs/ events and provides health care services to athletes, sports participants, and physically active individuals.

Duties for the position include:

  • Set up equipment and inventory supplies
  • Monitor environmental risk factors (temperature, humidity, severe weather, sun exposure)
  • Evaluate facilities for injury prevention/risk management
  • Review policies and learn site specific Emergency Action Plans, as well as Standard Operating procedures/policies concerning Concussion, HIPAA, biohazard, and documentation
  • Use patient privacy and confidentiality principles (HIPAA)

·         Surveillance of athletes at practice/competition areas, responding with staff to observe management of injuries, further referral for medical care as deemed necessary and/ or establishing a treatment or return to participation plan. Also will observe communication with patient/participants, family, coaches, and staff.

 ·         Learn CPR/AED and basic first aid skills

 

Required Qualifications:

·         Workplace Learning Connection Intern

  • Desire to learn about injury recognition, evaluation, injury management, initial first aid treatment, wound care, risk management, preventive taping and padding, rehabilitation, and medical documentation
  • Desire to learn about musculoskeletal injuries, concussion, and other injury/illness common to the physically active population

·         Knowledge of importance of patient privacy and confidentiality principles

Desired Qualifications:

Interest in Athletic Training profession

Communicates effectively within health care team and with clients, patients, and families

Documentation and writing skills with word processing software

Functions well and collaborates within multi-disciplinary team

First Aid and CPR/AED certification

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
