911 Communications Dispatch Intern

The Communications Division of the Jones County Sheriff’s Department has responsibility for communications operations for the Sheriff's Office, as well as 3 law enforcement agencies, 5 ambulance services, and 9 fire departments serving Jones County.

 

The 911 Communications Dispatch Intern will have the opportunity to learn about various aspects of communications within the Sheriff’s Department. Available only to upcoming or current seniors.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Use and model appropriate behavior in keeping with the mission, vision, and beliefs and in accordance with operation procedures and policies. 
  • Welcome, value and nurture people of all backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, as well as support and promote an environment that accepts differences.
  • May receive non-emergency, emergency and other requests for assistance concerning; crimes, fire, animal control, medical, or general information concerning addresses and nature of problems.
  • Operate radio and computer equipment; to maintain contact with law enforcement personnel, fire departments, medical services, social services, wrecker services, emergency management and National Weather Service.
  • May send and receive requests by via multi-frequency radio, phone, text, electronic format or fax from law enforcement, fire/medical personnel, and other public safety agencies.
  • Process complaints and make appropriate referrals on a broad variety of public safety matters, that often require referring to or memorizing detailed reference material and standard operating guidelines, including databases, maps, telephone listings and other resources.
  • May access and operate NCIC and the IOWA System to locate warrants, missing persons, runaways, stolen vehicles and stolen articles and effectively communicate this information to Officers.  Enter, modify, clear or delete data from the system.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Communications Supervisor, Chief Deputy or Sheriff.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Skills/Knowledge:  Ability to follow instructions, and appropriately handle confidential records and information.  Must be detail-oriented, possess strong organizational skills, be courteous, and respectful.  Professional, trustworthy, and confidential conduct is required.  Intern must work well with others, be self-motivated, able to multi-task, quick to respond, and have excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Experience/Education:  Must be a high school student in good standing, and at least 18 years of age to have access to the IOWA/NCIC System.  Intern must not be addicted to drugs or alcohol, or convicted of an aggravated misdemeanor or felony.  A criminal background check and fingerprints are required.  Must be poised, mature and possess a positive attitude while being flexible.  Must be able to operate multiple computers, programs, and applications
  • Attire: Plan to dress appropriately for varied conditions based on instruction from Communications Director and/or Sheriff’s Office staff.
  • General Physical Activities with or without reasonable accommodation:  Frequent walking, sitting, standing, and lifting up to 30lbs.  Occasional kneeling, crouching, reaching, grasping, pulling, pushing and lifting over 30 lbs. 

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
