The Center for Worker Justice Summer Internship Program:
The Center for Worker Justice is an organization that works to unite low-wage workers in Eastern Iowa across race and immigration status to achieve social and economic justice through education, direct service, and community alliances. We are looking for a Summer Intern who is passionate about social justice, civil rights, affordable housing, and universal accessibility to community resources to help improve Eastern Iowa communities.
Objectives of this Role:
· Explore social and economic issues through the first-hand perspective of low-income and diverse members of the community
· Develop professional, supportive relationships with community members to provide safe and inviting access to advocacy and community resources
· Assist in the efficient operation of the organization and administration of services to members.
· Engage in and support meaningful collaboration among multilingual and multiracial staff and community members in a dynamic organizational setting.
Daily Responsibilities:
· Work closely with CWJ staff, members, and other interns to design and develop work plans and schedules for new initiatives
· Assist with campaign execution and task distribution as needed
· Assist with event planning tasks, including the creation of and distribution of promotional materials, event set-up, etc.
· Take accurate and thorough notes during and after meetings, events, and/or sessions with CWJ members to assist with data collection and reporting.
· Ensure that office supplies and other necessary materials are kept in stock and available to CWJ staff.
· Assist with the upkeep and organization of calendars and upcoming meetings
· Oversee clerical tasks such as intake processes and office organization duties.
Skills and Qualifications
· Effective written and verbal communication skills
· Ability and willingness to learn new tasks, follow directions, and work independently when needed
· Reasonable time management and ability to adhere to a structured work schedule
· Excellent organizational skills
· Basic understanding of social issues and ethics
· Willingness and enthusiasm to work with people of all ages, identities, ethnicities, and socio-economic classes
· Drive to learn more about social issues, community organizing, workers’ rights, access to housing, and immigration issues
Desired Skill Set (but not required)
· Multilingual Communication Skills
· Experience designing or creating promotional materials (i.e., flyers, social media posts), Digital Presence, and/or other avenues of Advertising/Marketing.
· Experience in Community Organizing, Social Service, Customer Service, and/or Public Non-Profit work.
· Experience researching social issues and/or the efficacy of social programs
This description does not list all duties. Intern may be asked to perform other duties by the staff or supervisor. Intern will be evaluated on performance of the projects listed as well as interaction with employees and clients. On-site hours will be negotiated with each candidate.
