Wildlife Rehabilitation Assistant Intern

Office Hours: 8-10:30 AM, 2-5 PM

 

The Wapsi River Wildlife Rehabilitation Project is a DNR Licensed Wildlife Rescue Team.  Their goal is to care for injured, orphaned or displaced wildlife in an effort to release healthy individuals back into their natural habitats, preserving wildlife and our natural resources for our children's future.

 

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Assistant Intern will have the opportunity to learn about various aspects of care for wild animals through this internship.  Typical daily tasks will include animal care, and maintenance of kennels, cages and the surrounding spaces. 

 

Essential Functions:

  • Use and model appropriate behavior in keeping with the mission, vision, and beliefs of the organization, and in accordance with operation procedures and policies. 
  • Welcome, value and nurture people of all backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, as well as support and promote an environment that accepts differences.
  • Intern will assist director with feed preparation, feeding and care of young and orphaned wild animals.
  • Intern will assist director with maintenance of animal spaces; laundry, sweeping, dishes, etc.
  • Intern may assist with retrieval of orphaned animals from the field.  Be prepared for varied weather conditions.
  • Other duties may be assigned by director.

 

Minimum Requirements:
Skills/Knowledge:  Ability to follow instructions, be detail-oriented, possess strong organizational skills, and be courteous, and respectful.  Professional, trustworthy, and confidential conduct is required.  Intern must work well with others, be self-motivated, and able to multi-task. 

Experience/Education:  Must be a high school student in good standing.  Must be poised, mature and possess a positive attitude while being flexible. 

Attire: Plan to dress appropriately for varied weather conditions.  Closed toed shoes are required.  Gloves, Long pants and long sleeved t-shirts are recommended to reduce potential for being scratched.  No sleeveless shirts or short shorts.  Director will provide smock for some situations.  Expect to get dirty.

General Physical Activities with or without reasonable accommodation:  Frequent walking, sitting, standing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, grasping, and lifting up to 30lbs.  Occasional pulling, pushing and lifting over 30 lbs. 

 

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
