Internship Title: DNR Environmental Specialist Intern

Essential Functions May Include:

  • Shadow environmental specialists. 
  • Gain office and hands-on field experience.
  • May include operating field test kits, operating a handheld "miniRae" VOC monitor and/or a FLIR camera (infrared camera capable of detecting VOC emissions). 
  • Investigating complaints of suspected illegal dumping, causing both water and air quality violations.
  • Investigating open burns.
  • Investigating complaints caused by road work, working with project managers and Iowa DOT.
  • Gain knowledge of the Clean Air Act expectations and how they are conveyed to the Iowa DNR through EPA.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ability to follow instructions and be detail oriented.  
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, be a team player and be able to work independently with supervision as needed. 
  • Professional and trustworthy conduct is required.  Must be courteous and respectful. 
  • Must be a high school senior in good standing.  Prompt and dependable, take pride and ownership in work. 
  • Must be a self-starter and able to perform routine tasks without being prompted.
  • Long pants, shirt and boots must be worn at all times.  No shorts, tank tops or tennis shoes are permitted.
  • Must have a block of large time available to complete internship hours.

 

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
