Public Works maintains the community’s infrastructure, including streets, bridges, traffic signals and traffic flow, storm sewer/storm water, and flood control operations.

 

The City of Cedar Rapids is proud to offer Civil Engineering Internship opportunities to local high school student. Interns will spend their time in the public works department, focusing on sidewalk and ADA inspections.

 

Essential Functions:

·         Training on ADA compliance

·         Training on understanding city and state code

·         Inspection of sidewalk and ADA ramps within the city

·         Working with software such as GIS

·         Basic survey skills

·         Compilation and analysis of inspection

·         Review of permit applications and citizen requests

·         Learn to use excel and other data management tools for better management of infrastructure

·         Collaborating with management to improve upon the inspection program within the sidewalk and ADA department

 

Additional Opportunities:

·         Learn about Derecho recovery efforts

·         Join in on various Field trips to City operational destinations, including the WWTP and Water Treatment Plant

·         Attend meeting for construction projects to learn about daily operations and duties of a civil engineer and their role in projects

 

Minimum Requirements:

This position will entail interacting with the public.

Professionalism and good communication skills is a must.

·      During the summer session, this internship is only available in June through mid-July and must be spread out over the course of several weeks. 

··        Ability to follow instructions. Professional and trustworthy conduct is required.

·         Must be courteous and respectful.

·         Ability to learn quickly.

·         Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.

·         Must be poised, mature and possess a positive attitude while being flexible.

·         Ability to work outside during the day.

 

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
