Overview:
This internship introduces high school students to the field of chemistry and laboratory science. Interns will observe and assist chemists as they conduct experiments, analyze substances, and explore chemical reactions. The experience provides insight into lab techniques, safety procedures, and the role of chemistry in research, industry, and everyday life.
Key Responsibilities May Include:
· Shadow chemists during laboratory experiments and research projects
· Assist with non-technical tasks such as preparing materials, labeling samples, or recording observations
· Observe how chemists conduct experiments, analyze data, and maintain accurate records
· Learn about lab equipment, chemical safety, and proper handling of materials
· Gain exposure to teamwork, lab organization, and professional communication
· Completing assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program
Learning Outcomes:
· Understand the role of chemists in scientific research and industry
· Learn basic laboratory procedures, safety practices, and experimental techniques
· Gain awareness of accuracy, detail, and ethical considerations in lab work
· Develop observation, organizational, and critical thinking skills

· Interns will primarily observe and assist with support tasks; they will not perform independent chemical experiments

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.
SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
