Civil Engineering Intern

 

Overview:

This internship introduces high school students to the field of civil engineering, where professionals design, build, and maintain infrastructure such as roads, bridges, buildings, and water systems. Students will gain hands-on exposure to engineering concepts, assist with project support tasks, and observe how engineers apply math, science, and problem-solving to real-world challenges.

Responsibilities May Include:

·         Shadow civil engineers and project managers in office and field settings.

·         Learn about engineering drawings, blueprints, and design software.

·         Assist with basic project research, data collection, or surveying tasks.

·         Observe construction sites and learn about safety procedures and project management.

·         Support office tasks such as organizing files, preparing materials, and reviewing project documents.

·         Completing assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program

Skills & Knowledge Gained:

·         Introduction to civil engineering principles and real-world applications.

·         Understanding of how math and science are used in problem-solving.

·         Exposure to design tools, drafting, and surveying equipment.

·         Awareness of safety protocols and professional practices in engineering.

·         Development of teamwork, communication, and critical thinking skills.

Requirements:

·         Interest in math, science, design, or problem-solving.

·         Willingness to learn in both office and field environments.

·         Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this internship, students will have a foundational understanding of civil engineering, insight into how infrastructure projects are designed and built, and clearer direction toward career and college opportunities in engineering and related fields.

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
