About the Internship:

 
This internship offers high school students an introduction to microbiology, the study of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Interns will assist laboratory staff with basic research and lab support while gaining exposure to scientific methods and safety practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with preparation of lab materials, media, and cultures.

  • Learn sterile techniques for handling samples under supervision.

  • Help collect, label, and record biological samples.

  • Support lab safety and cleanliness by sanitizing equipment and workspaces.

  • Observe experiments and research procedures conducted by microbiologists.

  • Participate in data entry and documentation of lab activities.

  • Complete assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understanding of microbiology concepts and laboratory techniques.

  • Experience working in a professional lab environment with safety protocols.

  • Exposure to real-world applications of microbiology in health, agriculture, and the environment.

  • Development of critical thinking, attention to detail, and teamwork skills.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in high school (11th - 12th grade).

  • Interest in biology, health sciences, or laboratory research.

  • Responsible, detail-oriented, and able to follow safety guidelines.

  • Comfortable working in a laboratory environment.

  • Basic knowledge of science and computers for data entry.

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
