Research - Chemistry Intern
Researcher - Chemistry Intern
Overview:
This internship introduces high school students to the field of chemistry research and the role of scientists in exploring the properties of matter. Interns will observe and assist researchers as they prepare experiments, collect data, and analyze results. The experience provides insight into laboratory work, safety procedures, and how chemistry is applied to solve real-world problems.
Key Responsibilities May Include:
· Shadow chemists during lab experiments, research meetings, and project discussions
· Assist with simple, non-technical tasks such as labeling samples, cleaning glassware, or recording data under supervision
· Learn how data is collected, analyzed, and presented in scientific research
· Observe the use of lab equipment, safety protocols, and experimental design
· Gain exposure to teamwork, lab organization, and professional scientific communication
· Completing assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program
Learning Outcomes:
· Understand the role of research in advancing chemistry and related sciences
· Learn about scientific methods, chemical processes, and safe laboratory practices
· Gain awareness of accuracy, detail, and ethics in research work
· Develop observation, organizational, and critical thinking skills
· Explore career and educational pathways in chemistry, pharmaceuticals, or scientific research
Preferred Skills/Interests:
· Interest in chemistry, science, or laboratory work
· Curiosity and willingness to learn about scientific research
· Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions and safety procedures
· Professionalism, reliability, and teamwork skills
Additional Information:
· Interns will primarily observe and assist with beginner-level tasks; they will not conduct advanced chemical experiments independently
· Compliance with lab safety rules, protective equipment, and research guidelines is required
· Some placements may require safety training, orientations, or background checks before starting
Notice on Internship Opportunities
Please note that internship opportunities will vary by host site and county.
· Not all career areas or placements will be available in every location.
· Host sites may have different requirements, schedules, responsibilities.
· Opportunities depend on local partnerships, availability, and community resources.
Students are encouraged to remain flexible and open to a variety of learning experiences. Each internship is designed to provide valuable workplace skills, career exploration, and professional growth - regardless of the specific placement.
THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.
SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
