Environmental Engineer Intern

Position Summary:
This internship introduces high school students to the field of environmental engineering, where science and engineering meet to protect human health and the environment. Interns will shadow engineers and professionals working on projects such as water quality, air pollution control, waste management, and sustainability initiatives. Students will gain insight into how environmental engineers solve real-world problems and support community well-being.

Responsibilities:

  • Observe environmental engineers during fieldwork, lab testing, or project meetings.

  • Assist with collecting and recording data on water, air, or soil samples (non-technical tasks appropriate for student level).

  • Learn about environmental regulations and compliance standards.

  • Support sustainability initiatives (e.g., recycling, conservation projects).

  • Participate in discussions on project design, testing, and problem-solving.

  • Complete assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the role of environmental engineers in protecting natural resources.

  • Explore key concepts in sustainability, pollution control, and public health.

  • Develop professional skills in teamwork, observation, and communication.

  • Learn about education and career pathways in environmental engineering.

Qualifications:

  • High school student (11th - 12th grade).

  • Interest in science, engineering, or environmental issues.

  • Strong attention to detail, curiosity, and willingness to learn.

  • Reliable, responsible, and able to follow safety protocols.

Details:

  • Duration: Semester or summer placement.

  • Schedule: 5–10 hours per week, flexible with school commitments.

  • Location: Engineering office, lab, or fieldwork sites.

  • Supervision: Licensed Environmental Engineer or environmental science professional.

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
