Athletic Trainer Intern

Position Summary:

 
This internship introduces high school students to the field of athletic training. Interns will shadow certified athletic trainers (ATCs) as they support athletes in injury prevention, care, and recovery. Students will learn how athletic trainers contribute to sports teams, schools, and health care while gaining exposure to career pathways in sports medicine.

Responsibilities:

  • Shadow athletic trainers during practices, games, and rehabilitation sessions.

  • Observe injury evaluations, taping, stretching, and preventative care techniques.

  • Assist with organizing and cleaning equipment, preparing ice packs, and setting up training areas.

  • Learn about proper documentation and athlete communication.

  • Gain exposure to health and safety protocols in athletics.

  • Complete assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the role of athletic trainers in sports medicine and athlete wellness.

  • Learn basic injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation concepts.

  • Develop professional skills in communication, observation, and teamwork.

  • Explore education and career pathways in athletic training and related health fields.

Qualifications:

  • High school student (11th - 12th grade).

  • Interest in sports, health sciences, or athletic performance.

  • Reliable, professional, and willing to maintain confidentiality.

  • Able to follow directions and demonstrate respect for athletes, coaches, and staff.

Details:

  • Duration: Semester or summer placement.

  • Schedule: 5–10 hours per week, aligned with practices/games.

  • Location: School athletic training room, sporting events, or affiliated clinics.

  • Supervision: Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC).

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
