Research - Physics Intern

Physics Research Intern

Overview:
This internship introduces high school students to the field of physics research and the process of scientific discovery. Interns will observe and assist researchers as they conduct experiments, analyze data, and explore physics concepts. The experience provides insight into how physics is applied in labs, technology, and real-world problem solving.

Key Responsibilities May Include:

·         Shadow researchers during lab work, experiments, and project discussions

·         Assist with non-technical tasks such as preparing materials, recording observations, or organizing research notes

·         Learn how data is collected, analyzed, and presented in physics research

·         Observe the use of scientific equipment, simulations, or computer models

·         Gain exposure to professional teamwork, lab safety, and scientific communication

   ·         Completing assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program

Learning Outcomes:

·         Understand the role of research in advancing physics and related sciences

·         Learn about scientific methods and how experiments are designed and carried out

·         Gain awareness of data collection, analysis, and the importance of accuracy in research

·         Develop observation, critical thinking, and organizational skills

·         Explore career and educational pathways in physics, engineering, or scientific research

Preferred Skills/Interests:

·         Interest in science, math, or problem-solving

·         Curiosity and willingness to learn about research processes

·         Attention to detail and ability to follow safety and procedural guidelines

·         Professionalism, reliability, and teamwork skills

Additional Information:

·         Interns will primarily observe and assist with support tasks; they will not independently conduct advanced experiments

·         Compliance with lab safety rules, protective equipment, and research policies is required

·         Some placements may require background checks, lab orientations, or safety training before starting

Notice on Internship Opportunities

Please note that internship opportunities will vary by host site and county.

·         Not all career areas or placements will be available in every location.

·         Host sites may have different requirements, schedules, responsibilities.

·         Opportunities depend on local partnerships, availability, and community resources.

Students are encouraged to remain flexible and open to a variety of learning experiences. Each internship is designed to provide valuable workplace skills, career exploration, and professional growth - regardless of the specific placement.

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
