Costume Designer Intern

Overview:
This internship introduces high school students to the creative world of costume design for theater, film, or special events. Interns will observe and assist costume designers as they sketch ideas, select fabrics, and prepare costumes for productions. The experience provides insight into fashion design, creativity, and the behind-the-scenes work of performance arts.

Key Responsibilities May Include:

·         Shadow costume designers during design sessions, fittings, and production meetings

·         Assist with tasks such as organizing costumes, preparing materials, or maintaining wardrobe pieces

·         Observe how designers collaborate with directors and performers to bring characters to life through clothing

·         Learn about fabric selection, sewing, alterations, and design presentation

·         Gain exposure to teamwork, creative problem-solving, and production schedules

   ·         Completing assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program

Learning Outcomes:

·         Understand the role of costume designers in supporting storytelling and character development

·         Learn basic design, sewing, and costume care skills

·         Gain awareness of professionalism, creativity, and collaboration in performing arts

·         Develop observation, organizational, and artistic skills

·         Explore career and educational pathways in costume design, fashion, or theater production

Preferred Skills/Interests:

·         Interest in fashion, theater, or design

·         Creativity, attention to detail, and patience

·         Basic sewing or crafting skills (helpful but not required)

·         Professionalism, teamwork, and willingness to learn

Additional Information:

·         Interns will primarily observe and assist with support tasks; they will not independently design costumes for productions

·         Compliance with workplace policies, safety procedures, and production guidelines is required

·         Some placements may involve evening or weekend hours during rehearsals or performances

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
