Sign Language Interpreter Intern

Overview:
This internship introduces high school students to the field of sign language interpretation. Interns will observe and assist professional interpreters as they facilitate communication between individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing and those who use spoken language. The experience provides insight into effective communication, language skills, and accessibility in educational, medical, or community settings.

Key Responsibilities May Include:

·         Shadow professional interpreters during meetings, classes, or community interactions

·         Assist with preparation tasks such as organizing materials or setting up interpretation equipment

·         Observe how interpreters convey messages accurately and maintain confidentiality

·         Learn about sign language techniques, cultural considerations, and professional standards

·         Gain exposure to teamwork, ethical communication, and professional conduct in interpretation settings

   ·         Completing assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program

Learning Outcomes:

·         Understanding the role of a sign language interpreter in facilitating communication

·         Learn basic interpreting skills, communication strategies, and accessibility practices

·         Gain awareness of professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical responsibilities

·         Develop observation, organizational, and interpersonal skills

·         Explore career and educational pathways in sign language interpretation, linguistics, or accessibility services

Preferred Skills/Interests:

·         Interest in sign language, communication, or helping others

·         Good attention to detail and strong observational skills

·         Professionalism, reliability, and willingness to learn

·         Respect for confidentiality and cultural sensitivity

Additional Information:

·         Interns will primarily observe and assist with support tasks; they will not interpret independently

·         Compliance with workplace policies, confidentiality, and professional standards is required

·         Some placements may involve attending meetings, classes, or community events outside of school hours

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
