Legal Intern

 

Overview:

This internship introduces high school students to the legal field and the daily work of attorneys, paralegals, and other legal professionals. Interns will observe legal processes, assist with office tasks, and gain exposure to the role of law in society. This opportunity provides insight into professional communication, research, and problem-solving in a legal setting.

Key Responsibilities:

·         Shadow attorneys, paralegals, or legal assistants in meetings or office work

·         Observe court proceedings, client consultations, or legal research (as appropriate)

·         Assist with administrative tasks such as filing, organizing case materials, or preparing documents

·         Learn about confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical standards in law

·         Gain exposure to how legal professionals communicate with clients, courts, and other organizations

·         Support staff with special projects or community legal education efforts

·         Completing assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program

Learning Outcomes:

·         Understand the role of lawyers, paralegals, and other staff in the legal system

·         Gain awareness of legal processes such as research, documentation, and case preparation

·         Learn about professional conduct, confidentiality, and ethics in law

·         Develop stronger communication, organization, and critical thinking skills

·         Explore education and career pathways in law, government, or public service

Preferred Skills/Interests:

·         Interest in law, justice, or government

·         Strong attention to detail and ability to handle sensitive information responsibly

·         Good organizational and communication skills

·         Professionalism and willingness to learn

 

Additional Information:

·         Interns will primarily observe and assist with support tasks; they will not provide legal advice or represent clients

·         Professional attire may be required, especially for court observations

·         Compliance with confidentiality and workplace policies is expected

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
