Civil Rights Intern

 

Overview:

This internship introduces high school students to the field of civil rights and social justice. Interns will observe and assist professionals who work to protect rights, promote equity, and advocate for communities. The experience provides insight into legal processes, advocacy, research, and community engagement related to civil rights.

Responsibilities May Include:

·         Shadow civil rights lawyers, advocates, or nonprofit staff during meetings, research, and outreach activities

·         Assist with administrative tasks such as organizing documents, preparing materials, or maintaining records

·         Observe legal research, case preparation, and advocacy strategies

·         Participate in community outreach or education programs (as appropriate)

·         Learn about civil rights laws, policies, and ethical standards

·         Gain exposure to professional communication, teamwork, and public service

·         Completing assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program

Learning Outcomes:

·         Understand the role of civil rights professionals in protecting and advocating for individuals and communities

·         Learn about legal frameworks, social justice initiatives, and advocacy strategies

·         Gain awareness of professionalism, ethics, and communication in civil rights work

·         Develop research, organization, and observation skills

·         Explore educational and career pathways in law, public policy, social justice, and advocacy

Additional Information:

·         Interns will primarily observe and assist with support tasks; they will not provide legal advice or represent clients

·         Compliance with confidentiality, dress code, and workplace policies are required

·         Some placements may involve attending public meetings, hearings, or community events

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
