Law Enforcement Intern

 

Overview:

This internship introduces high school students to the field of law enforcement and public safety. Students will observe law enforcement officers and staff as they serve the community, gaining exposure to different areas of police work such as patrol operations, investigations, community outreach, and office support. The internship is designed to provide insight into how law enforcement agencies work and to help students explore future career opportunities in criminal justice.

Responsibilities May Include:

·         Shadow officers and staff to observe daily duties in the station and community.

·         Learn about crime prevention, community policing, and public safety programs.

·         Observe dispatch operations, ride-alongs (if permitted), or community engagement events.

·         Completing assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program.

Skills & Knowledge Gained:

·         Introduction to law enforcement operations and procedures.

·         Awareness of the importance of communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.

·         Understanding of ethical decision-making and community relations.

·         Exposure to careers in criminal justice, corrections, emergency services, and public safety.

·         Professionalism and respect for confidentiality in sensitive environments.

Requirements:

·         Interest in criminal justice, public safety, or community service.

·         Strong sense of responsibility, maturity, and respect for authority.

·         Willingness to follow agency rules, confidentiality policies, and safety procedures.

·         Good communication and teamwork skills.

·         A background check may be required prior to starting.

 

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this internship, students will have a deeper understanding of the role of law enforcement in their community, firsthand experience in a professional setting, and clearer direction toward career and educational opportunities in public safety and criminal justice.

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
