Overview:
This internship introduces high school students to the funeral services profession. Interns will observe funeral directors and staff as they assist families, coordinate services, and manage the operations of a funeral home. The experience provides insight into grief support, event planning, and the professional responsibilities of funeral service providers.

Responsibilities May Include:

·         Shadow funeral directors and staff during funeral planning, memorial services, and administrative tasks

·         Observe how directors communicate with families, coordinate logistics, and manage ceremonial details

·         Assist with non-clinical or non-emotional support tasks such as organizing documents, preparing materials, and maintaining workspaces

·         Learn about professional ethics, confidentiality, and sensitivity in client interactions

·         Gain exposure to funeral home operations, record-keeping, and community outreach

   ·         Completing assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program

Learning Outcomes:

·         Understand the role of funeral directors in supporting families and managing services

·         Learn about the planning and coordination involved in funeral and memorial services

·         Gain awareness of professional conduct, empathy, and confidentiality in the funeral industry

·         Develop organizational, communication, and observation skills

·         Explore career and educational pathways in funeral services, grief counseling, or business management

Preferred Skills/Interests:

·         Interest in helping others, event coordination, or healthcare-related services

·         Strong communication and organizational skills

·         Professionalism, empathy, and respect for sensitive situations

·         Ability to observe and learn in a respectful, supportive manner

Additional Information:

·         Interns will primarily observe and assist with support tasks; they will not provide counseling or make independent service decisions

·         Compliance with dress code, professional conduct, and confidentiality is required

·         Some placements may involve attending services, ceremonies, or community events

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
