City Manager Intern

Overview:
This internship introduces high school students to local government leadership and the role of a city manager. Interns will observe city officials as they oversee daily operations, manage budgets, and support community services. The experience provides insight into public administration, policy, and leadership in serving a community.

Key Responsibilities May Include:

·         Shadow the city manager and staff during meetings, planning sessions, and community events

·         Learn about city services such as public works, parks, safety, and economic development

·         Assist with administrative tasks such as organizing files, preparing documents, or updating records

·         Observe how decisions are made regarding budgets, city policies, and community priorities

·         Gain exposure to professional communication, leadership, and teamwork in a government setting

   ·         Completing assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program

Learning Outcomes:

·         Understand the role of a city manager in running local government operations

·         Learn how budgets, policies, and community services are developed and managed

·         Gain awareness of public service, leadership, and ethical responsibilities in government

·         Develop organizational, observation, and communication skills

·         Explore career and educational pathways in public administration, political science, or community leadership

·         Interest in government, leadership, or community service

·         Strong communication and organizational skills

·         Professionalism, reliability, and willingness to learn

·         Curiosity about how policies and decisions affect a community

Additional Information:

·         Interns will primarily observe and assist with support tasks; they will not make independent policy or financial decisions

·         Compliance with workplace policies, confidentiality, and dress code is required

·         Some placements may include attending city council meetings or community events outside of regular school hours

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
