EMT/Paramedic Intern

 

Overview:

This internship introduces high school students to the fast-paced world of emergency medical services (EMS). Interns will observe EMTs and paramedics as they respond to emergencies, provide patient care, and transport individuals to medical facilities. The experience offers insight into healthcare, teamwork, and critical decision-making in urgent situations.

Responsibilities May Include:

·         Shadow EMTs/paramedics during ride-alongs, training exercises, or station duties

·         Observe how emergency calls are received, prioritized, and responded to

·         Learn about basic life support skills, emergency equipment, and patient assessment (observation only)

·         Assist with non-clinical tasks such as restocking supplies, organizing equipment, and maintaining readiness of the ambulance or station

·         Observe professional communication among EMS staff, patients, hospitals, and other first responders

·         Gain exposure to safety protocols and procedures in high-stress environments

·         Completing assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program

Learning Outcomes:

·         Understand the role of EMTs and paramedics in emergency healthcare and public safety

·         Learn how teamwork, communication, and quick thinking are used in emergencies

·         Gain awareness of emergency medical equipment and procedures

·         Develop an appreciation for safety, professionalism, and patient confidentiality in EMS

·         Explore career and education pathways in EMS, paramedicine, and related healthcare fields

Preferred Skills/Interests:

·         Interest in healthcare, emergency response, or public safety

·         Ability to stay calm and observe carefully in stressful situations

·         Respect for patient privacy and confidentiality (HIPAA)

·         Willingness to follow directions and safety rules closely

Additional Information:

·         Interns will primarily observe and support non-clinical tasks; they will not provide direct medical care

·         Some placements may require health screenings, background checks, or proof of immunizations

·         Interns may need to commit to irregular schedules, including evenings or weekends, depending on EMS availability

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
