Hospital Environmental Services Intern

Overview:

This internship introduces high school students to the environmental services (EVS) department in a hospital. Interns will observe and assist staff who maintain cleanliness, sanitation, and safety throughout patient care areas. Experience provides insight into the essential role EVS plays in infection control, hospital operations, and patient safety.

Responsibilities May Include:

·         Shadow environmental services staff during daily cleaning and maintenance routines

·         Assist with organizing supplies, restocking cleaning materials, and maintaining equipment

·         Observe cleaning and sanitation procedures in patient rooms, public areas, and clinical spaces

·         Learn about safety protocols, infection control, and proper handling of cleaning chemicals

·         Support staff with departmental tasks and special projects

·         Gain exposure to teamwork, communication, and professionalism in a hospital setting

·         Completing assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program

Learning Outcomes:

·         Understand the role of environmental services in maintaining a safe and clean hospital

·         Learn about infection control, safety standards, and proper sanitation procedures

·         Gain awareness of the importance of teamwork and attention to detail

·         Develop organizational and professional skills applicable in healthcare and other industries

·         Explore career pathways in hospital operations, environmental services, or facilities management

Additional Information:

·         Interns will primarily observe and assist with support tasks; they will not perform high-risk or unsupervised cleaning procedures

·         Compliance with dress code, safety protocols, and hospital policies is required

·         Some placements may require health screenings or background checks prior to starting

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
