Overview:
This internship introduces high school students to medical laboratory science. Interns will observe medical technologists as they perform tests, analyze specimens, and support patient diagnostics. Experience provides exposure to laboratory procedures, safety protocols, and the role of lab professionals in healthcare.
Responsibilities May Include:
· Shadow medical technologists during routine laboratory testing and analysis
· Assist with non-clinical tasks such as organizing lab supplies, labeling specimens, and maintaining equipment
· Observe proper handling and processing of blood, tissue, and other specimens (observation only, no direct testing by interns)
· Learn about lab safety, infection control, and quality control procedures
· Support documentation and record-keeping as appropriate
· Gain exposure to teamwork, laboratory workflow, and professional communication
· Completing assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program
Learning Outcomes:
· Understand the role of medical technologists in patient care and diagnostics
· Learn about laboratory safety, infection control, and proper specimen handling
· Gain awareness of laboratory equipment, procedures, and workflow

Additional Information:
· Interns will primarily observe and assist with support tasks; they will not perform clinical testing
· Compliance with dress code, lab safety protocols, and confidentiality policies is required
· Some placements may require health screenings, background checks, or orientation before starting

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
