Overview:

This internship gives high school students an introduction to the nursing profession and the vital role nurses play in patient care. Interns will observe nurses in a hospital, clinic, or long-term care setting and assist with support tasks while learning about healthcare teamwork, patient interaction, and medical procedures.

Responsibilities May Include:

·         Shadow nurses as they care for patients in different healthcare environments

·         Observe patient check-ins, vital signs, and daily care routines

·         Assist with non-clinical tasks such as organizing supplies, stocking equipment, and maintaining clean work areas

·         Learn about professional communication between nurses, doctors, patients, and families

·         Observe how nurses document patient care and follow safety and privacy rules

·         Gain exposure to healthcare procedures and teamwork in action

·         Completing assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program

Learning Outcomes:

·         Understand the role of nurses in patient care and the healthcare system

·         Learn about daily responsibilities and challenges in nursing

·         Gain awareness of patient safety, confidentiality (HIPAA), and infection control practices

·         Develop an understanding of communication, empathy, and professionalism in healthcare

·         Explore career and educational pathways in nursing and related medical fields

Preferred Skills/Interests:

·         Interest in healthcare, science, and helping others

·         Respect for patient privacy and professionalism

·         Good communication and listening skills

·         Willingness to follow safety and health guidelines

Additional Information:

·         Interns will observe and assist with support tasks only; they will not provide direct medical care

·         Compliance with dress code, confidentiality, and infection control requirements is expected

·         Some placements may require health screenings, immunization records, or background checks before starting

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
