Overview:
This internship gives high school students the opportunity to explore the field of optometry, where professionals help patients maintain healthy vision and eye health. Students will observe optometrists and their staff in a clinical setting while gaining an introduction to eye care, vision testing, and office operations.
Responsibilities May Include:
• Shadow optometrists during patient exams and observe how vision and eye health are assessed.
• Learn about common eye conditions, glasses prescriptions, and contact lenses.
• Assist staff with preparing exam rooms, organizing equipment, and restocking supplies.
• Support administrative tasks such as filing, scheduling, and greeting patients.
• Participate in discussions about eye anatomy, vision health, and preventive care.
• Completing assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program
Skills & Knowledge Gained:
• Introduction to eye anatomy and vision science.
• Understanding of the role optometrists and staff play in patient care.
• Exposure to diagnostic tools and vision testing procedures.
• Development of professional communication and customer service skills.
• Insight into education and career pathways in optometry and related healthcare fields.

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.
