Overview:

This internship introduces high school students to the pharmacy field. Interns will observe pharmacists and pharmacy technicians as they prepare medications, assist patients, and manage pharmacy operations. The experience provides insight into healthcare, medication management, and customer service in a professional pharmacy setting.

Key Responsibilities:

·         Shadow pharmacists and pharmacy technicians during daily pharmacy operations

·         Observe how prescriptions are filled, verified, and dispensed (observation only; interns will not handle medications)

·         Assist with non-clinical tasks such as organizing inventory, labeling, and maintaining clean workspaces

·         Learn about patient communication, safety protocols, and confidentiality in healthcare

·         Observe how pharmacy staff counsel patients and manage healthcare records

·         Gain exposure to pharmacy software, inventory management, and workflow

·         Completing assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program

Learning Outcomes:

·         Understand the roles of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in healthcare

·         Learn about medication safety, prescription management, and professional ethics

·         Gain awareness of patient privacy, accuracy, and attention to detail in pharmacy operations

·         Develop observation, organization, and communication skills

·         Explore career and educational pathways in pharmacy, healthcare, and pharmaceutical sciences

·         Interest in healthcare, medicine, or pharmacy

·         Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

·         Good communication and interpersonal skills

·         Professionalism, reliability, and willingness to learn

Additional Information:

·         Interns will primarily observe and assist with support tasks; they will not dispense medications or provide medical advice

·         Compliance with dress code, safety, and confidentiality policies is required

·         Some placements may require background checks, health screenings, or immunizations before starting

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
