Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner Intern

 

Overview:

This internship introduces high school students to the roles of physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) in healthcare. Interns will observe PAs or NPs as they evaluate, diagnose, and support patient care under the supervision of licensed healthcare providers. The experience provides exposure to clinical procedures, patient interaction, and the responsibilities of advanced practice providers.

Responsibilities May Include:

·         Shadow PAs and NPs during patient appointments, assessments, and follow-up care

·         Observe clinical procedures, examinations, and patient counseling (observation only; interns will not perform medical procedures)

·         Assist with non-clinical tasks such as organizing charts, preparing educational materials, or updating resources

·         Learn about professional communication, patient confidentiality, and healthcare ethics (HIPAA)

·         Observe collaboration with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare staff

·         Gain exposure to healthcare documentation, workflow, and patient care coordination

·         Completing assignments, reflection journals, or internship workbook entries as required by the program

Learning Outcomes:

·         Understand the roles of PAs or NPs in patient care and healthcare teams

·         Learn about patient assessment, treatment planning, and professional healthcare practices

·         Gain awareness of confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical standards in clinical settings

·         Develop observation, communication, and organizational skills

·         Explore educational and career pathways in medicine, nursing, and advanced practice healthcare roles

·         Interest in healthcare, medicine, or patient care

·         Strong observation and communication skills

·         Respect for patient privacy and professionalism

·         Curiosity, reliability, and willingness to learn

Additional Information:

·         Interns will primarily observe and assist with support tasks; they will not provide direct medical care

·         Compliance with dress code, confidentiality, and workplace policies is required

·         Some placements may require health screenings, background checks, or immunizations prior to starting

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.
