This is a 45 hour internship, and available in the Spring and Fall Sessions

Anamosa Veterinary Clinic is a privately owned veterinary clinic that maintains an extensive staff of veterinarians, technicians, and assistants.  The office provides companion animal services, including exotic pets, and care for horses and livestock.

The Veterinary Assistant Intern, under the general supervision of clinic staff, will observe staff interactions with patients and clients, learn about the types of veterinary careers are available, and gain knowledge from assisting the small and large animal veterinarians. 

 

Essential Functions:

  • Use and model appropriate behavior in keeping with the mission, vision, and beliefs of the organization, and in accordance with operation procedures and policies.
  • Welcome, value and nurture people of all backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, as well as support and promote an environment that accepts differences.
  • Help prepare vaccinations, exam rooms, and equipment for daily appointments.
  • Assist veterinarians during onsite farm visits or in clinic.  Patient confidentiality must be exercised at all times.
  • Take notes or document services provided.
  • Assist with administering medications as directed by staff.
  • Maintain small animal kennels; clean kennels, feed patients, walk dogs.
  • Care and Clean facilities and equipment.
  • Help keep work areas neat and organized to promote positive image.  

Minimum Requirements:

Skills/Knowledge:  Must have the ability to follow instructions, strong organizational and communication skills, and be courteous and respectful.  Must be a detail-oriented team player.  Professional, trustworthy, and confidential conduct is required.  Intern must enjoy working with the public without bias, enjoy working with animals with compassion and empathy, be a self-starter, motivated, and able to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing.  Must possess the ability to think on their feet and work well under pressure.

Experience/Education:  Must be a high school student in good standing, and interested in pursuing a veterinary career after high school.  Must be poised, mature and possess a positive attitude while being flexible.  Preference will be given to students that have taken science and animal science classes.

Attire: Plan to dress appropriately for a veterinary clinic setting.  Closed toed shoes, long pants or jeans without holes.  Intern may need to be prepared to dress for varied outdoor weather conditions, and should be prepared to get dirty

General Physical Activities with or without reasonable accommodation:  Occasional sitting, standing, reaching, walking or lifting up to 30lbs.  Frequent kneeling, crouching, crawling, grasping, pulling, pushing or lifting over 30 lbs. 

 

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, WILL BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
