Internship Title: The Veterinarian Assistant Intern

 

Under the general supervision of clinic staff, will observe staff interactions with patients and clients, learn about the types of veterinary careers are available, and gain knowledge from assisting the small and large animal veterinarians. 

 

Essential Functions:

  • Use and model appropriate behavior in keeping with the mission, vision, and beliefs of the organization, and in accordance with operation procedures and policies.
  • Welcome, value and nurture people of all backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, as well as support and promote an environment that accepts differences.
  • Assist Doctor and Technical Staff with animals during examinations and treatments using restraint when necessary.    
  • Will work with small and large animals, in clinic and on farms.
  • Assist in setting up prescriptions (accurate counting, packaging and labeling).
  • Aid in surgical preparation of patients.
  • General cleaning duties including kennels, clinic floors and shelves, examination rooms, and laundry.
  • Feed, water, and exercise dogs and cats.
  • Lift, carry and stock pet food.
  • Answer phones, make appointments and greet clients.
  • Check-in and check-out clients using the computer.
  • Will be expected to maintain the privacy and integrity of Clients, Doctors, and other Staff Members.  Any conversations, discussions or other information gathered from the practice is confidential and will remain in the practice.
  • Help keep work areas neat and organized to promote positive image.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Skills/Knowledge:  Must have the ability to follow instructions and perform routine task without instruction, possess strong organizational and communication skills, and be courteous and respectful.  Must be a dependable and prompt, detail-oriented team player.  Professional, trustworthy, and confidential conduct is required.  Intern must enjoy working with the people and animals without bias, be a self-starter, motivated, and able to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing. 
  • Experience/Education:  Must be a high school student in good standing, and interested in pursuing a veterinary career after high school.  Math, science, and animal husbandry background is a plus.
  •  Attire: Plan to dress appropriately for a veterinary clinic setting.  Closed toed shoes, long pants or jeans without holes.  Intern should be prepared to dress for varied outdoor weather conditions, and should be prepared to get dirty
  •  General Physical Activities with or without reasonable accommodation:  Occasional sitting, standing, reaching, walking or lifting up to 30lbs.  Frequent kneeling, crouching, crawling, grasping, pulling, pushing or lifting over 30 lbs. 

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

 

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS, INCLUDING HARASSMENT, WILL BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST.
