About the National Advanced Driving Simulator:

Director: Karim Abdel Malek

Main focus: The National Advanced Driving Simulator at the University of Iowa is the world’s most advanced ground vehicle simulator available for shared use by public and private institutions.  The mission of the NADS is to help our research sponsors save lives, and reduce the cost of vehicle crashes, by better understanding the impact of technology, pharmaceuticals, and other factors on driving performance.

Components of the research: Work in this lab includes developing computer code, creating computer models, performing computational studies as described above, and analyzing and understanding results.

Essential Functions of the Engineering Research Assistant Position:

  • Student will assist in analyzing and post-processing data collected from computer programs simulating vehicles and driver environments.
  • Student will develop graphical user interfaces (GUIs) to improve the tools available for the analysis and post-processing of collected data.
  • Student will be trained to use the necessary computer programs.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Must be a self starter, team player and able to perform routine tasks without being prompted.
  • Must be prompt and dependable.
  • Must be a high school student in good standing. 
  • Must be poised, mature, and possess a positive attitude while being flexible. 
  • Ability to follow instructions a must. 
  • Must be professional, courteous, respectful, and trustworthy.
  • Must have some basic programming experience (any language).

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.
